Last week, the Gilmer Elementary School Library participated in many exciting events as a part of Children's Book Week.  Students participated in a Book Character Parade, a "Buckeyes Love Books" bookmark design contest, and a book donation drive in which all donated books were given to the Upshur County Library.  In addition, students were invited to wear camo to show others that they will "Hide Out With a Good Book."  Even several district employees joined in the fun by dressing up as their favorite book character and visiting classrooms for a special storytime.  The pictures from the fun-filled week are below.

Who Is Your Hero?

The Gilmer Elementary School library currently has several books on display about famous heroes.  When the students visit the library with their class, they are encouraged to check out one of these books to learn about positive role models. 

In correlation with this, the students are invited to choose a positive role model in their life that they would consider a hero.  (Students may choose someone they know or someone famous that they have learned about.)  After choosing their hero, they are encouraged to create a poster describing their hero.  We will have a “Who Is Your Hero?” parade on Thursday, April 2^nd where students will walk throughout the school displaying their poster.  This will allow our students to learn about a variety of different role models.  Students are encouraged to be as creative as possible in creating their poster.  The most important thing is to HAVE FUN!

Details about the “Who Is Your Hero?” parade:

Who: Any student at Gilmer Elementary School

What:  Students are invited to create a poster representing their role model for a “Who Is Your Hero?” parade.  (All posters must have the hero’s name, the student’s name, an illustration or photo of the hero, and details describing why the chosen person is a hero.)

When: Students may turn in posters to the librarian from now until April 2^nd. 

Where: Gilmer Elementary School

Why: Students will learn about numerous positive role models and the attributes that a true hero possesses.

Mystery Books

Throughout the last few weeks several students have checked out books from our "Mystery Books" section in the library.  These books are wrapped in paper with only a barcode on the outside of the package.  Instead of choosing a book based on the cover, students can check out a book that is a mystery to them!  Inside of these packages are books that cover topics such as weather, space, and animals, as well as poetry books, joke books, and novels.  The purpose of our "Mystery Books" is to encourage students to check out books that they may not even know they will enjoy!  Pictured below are two library patrons enjoying our "Mystery Books" section.

Lunch Bunch Book Clubs are Going Great!

A small group of second grade students in Ms. Brevard's class are participating in a Lunch Bunch Book Club each week.  These students eat lunch in the library while they read an interesting picture book.  This week the students enjoyed reading The Reluctant Flower Girl by Lynne Barasch.

Polar Express of Book Boxcars was a Success!

Over 160 students participated in our Polar Express of book boxcars in December.  Boxcars were created to represent various titles such as The Polar Express, Pete the Cat Saves Christmas, Frozen, and many more!  Thank you G.E.S. for such a huge participation!

G.E.S. Polar Express Project

Please join us in creating a G.E.S. Polar Express!  You are invited to create a train boxcar out of a shoebox or other small box.  Each boxcar should be decorated to represent your child’s favorite book.  Please include the book title, author, illustrator, and pictures of the characters on your child’s boxcar.  Make sure your child’s boxcar includes your child’s name and his/her teacher’s name.  All boxcars should be returned to the library by Friday, December 5^th.

 

Each boxcar will be placed in the library to create a large Polar Express!  Everyone who participates will receive a prize!  Be creative and HAVE FUN!

Sharon Ellsberry, guest author, visits G.E.S.!

Author Sharon Ellsberry visited all of the students at Gilmer Elementary School on November 14th.  The students enjoyed puppet shows, skits, music, and literature.  Mrs. Ellsberry has written five books starring the Spaniel family as the main characters.  These books include The Spaniel Family's Thanksgiving and The Mystery at the Spaniel Family's Dog House.  Please check out her website: www.gospaniels.com.  Thank you Mrs. Ellsberry!

Reading With a Pet Photo Contest

“Reading with a Pet” Photo Contest

The Gilmer Elementary School library will have a “Reading with a Pet” photo contest.  Students are invited to grab a book and a favorite pet while a family member takes a photo of this special reading moment. The photo should show students clearly reading a book with a pet.  (See examples below.)  The pet in the photo can be any type of pet: dog, cat, bird, cow, gerbil, pig, etc!  The pet can be your pet, a friend’s pet, or a stuffed animal!  The winners will have their photos displayed in our G.E.S. library.  Prizes will be given to all participants!

                                  

       

Who: Any student attending Gilmer Elementary School (One entry per student.)

When: Pictures can be submitted from October 6^th-October 10^th.  Judging will be held on Monday, October 13^th. 

How: Participating students must submit a 4x6 photo print of their contest entry between October 6^th-10^th.  Students must bring these submissions to Mrs. Reneau in the library.  Please complete a participation form and attach to your contest entry picture.  (Form is below.)

Fall Book Fair=SUCCESS!

The fall book fair was a great success.  Several students, teachers, and parents were able to purchase wonderful books last week.  One 3rd grade class even had a hands-on lesson over estimation at the book fair.  In addition, numerous students brought items to donate to the Humane Society of Northeast Texas during Family Night on Thursday.  Thank you for supporting the Gilmer Elementary School library!

Maker Space

Two second grade students visited our Maker Space section of the library last week.  These students were chosen for consistently showing hard work and a positive attitude during class.  At Maker Space, students are allowed to create anything they choose using a variety of materials.  These girls created necklaces, flowers, and other items during their time at Maker Space.  Natalie and Kara were chosen by Mrs. Clair and Mrs. Bean.

Happy Kindergarten Students

Several Kindergarten classes visited the school library for the first time today.  These students checked out a book from our picture book section while practicing correct library procedures.  Pictured below are three happy library patrons from Mrs. Engel's class.
