Boys Book Club=FUN!

The third grade boys from Mrs. Hooton's homeroom, Mrs. Henry's homeroom, and Ms. Scott's homeroom are having a great time at the Buckeye Book Club.  Each Thursday we read from Jake Drake Bully Buster by Andrew Clements.  The Buckeye Book Club members participate in games and creative activities each week after eating a delicious snack!  We are so proud of the boys that participate each week because they are growing their love for reading in a BIG way!  Below is a picture of a few of our boys that are anxiously waiting to begin the next chapter.

Student Work

The library walls are covered with amazing student work from the first and second six weeks.  The fourth grade students completed an Author Brochure where they had the opportunity to research one of these three authors: Patricia Polacco, Kate DiCamillo, and Jerry Spinelli.  The third grade students had the chance to complete a Movie Poster over a book of their choice.  Their poster included a title, a summary that mentioned the setting, and a list of actors chosen to play the characters in the book.  Our second grade students completed a book review over a book of their choice and decorated a paper pumpkin to represent the main character.  The work is amazing, and I am very proud of their effort!

In addition, our third grade Buckeye Book Club members decorated a pumpkin that is on display outside of the library.  This pumpkin is decorated to represent a character from the book, "Help Me, Mr. Mutt!  Expert Answers for Dogs with People Problems."  Great job students!!!

Mixing Literature with Science!

Last week Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Moore read Bartholomew and the Oobleck by Dr. Seuss to their Science classes.  After reading this entertaining book, each class made oobleck.  Then they investigated oobleck to find out if it is a solid or liquid.  Oobleck has properties of a solid AND a liquid!  Check out this great book at the G.E.S. library!

1st Grade Reader's Response--So Creative!

This first grader from Mrs. Gee's homeroom wrote a wonderful reader's response over the book, Froggy Rides a Bike by Jonathan London.  Great job, Thomas Whitworth!

4th Grade Student Book Review--A Must Read!

Read All About Me by Laura Bush and Jenna Bush

In the book Read All about Me by Laura Bush and Jenna Bush, Tyrone, the main character didn’t like reading because it looked boring. I was like Tyrone because I didn’t like reading.  Me and Tyrone would not read.  But in third grade my teacher Mrs. Henry told my class a story.  When she got in the middle of the story I thought all the characters were real.  I felt like the characters were my friends.  Tyrone’s teacher read his whole class a book.  The whole class was listening to it than he started listening to the book and he thought the pig was real.  He thought the pig was his friend.  Tyrone is just like me.  Tyrone and I finally listened to the book.  We both thought it was real.  Tyrone and I love reading now.

Box Tops for Education

Please remember to save your box tops!  The Box Tops for Education program is a wonderful program that will allow Gilmer Elementary School to purchase resources for our students.  Box tops are located on a number of products, such as cereal boxes, frozen food boxes, apparel packages, and much more.  Simply cut off the box top, glue it on a collection sheet (located in the library), and bring your completed collection sheet to the library.  We will submit the box tops and our school will earn money.  Just this year, we have submitted over $700.00 worth of box tops!  We will be able to provide our students with fabulous resources through this great program.  If you are interested in volunteering to count and organize box tops, please email me at reneauv@gilmerisd.org.  For more information, check out the Box Tops for Education website!
